Origin and history
The castle of Thuron finds its origins in an old seigneury dating back to the 11th century, although the present building was built in the second half of the 18th century. This castle, often attributed to the architect Brousseaud, is distinguished by its long central building with a forebody surmounted by a triangular pediment. The windows, adorned with segment lintels, and the cutting stone links reinforce its classic style. A cornice ends the whole, while a double-evolution staircase leads to the first floor, separated by bands.
Inside, the almost square entrance, decorated with arcades, gives access to a staircase supported by square pillars. The basement houses kitchens and outbuildings, while a long corridor serves upstairs rooms. The living room retains old fireplaces and woodwork, although the castle was looted in 1944. The facades and roofs, protected since 1969, bear witness to its heritage importance.
Located in Thouron in Haute-Vienne (New Aquitaine), the castle illustrates the architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the modern era. Its inscription as a Historic Monument in 1969 underscores its value, despite the degradations suffered in the twentieth century. Today, there remains a notable example of the Limousin heritage, mixing seigneurial heritage and classical elegance.
