Origin and history

Toulonjac Castle, located in the eponymous village of Aveyron (Occitanian region), has its origins in the 15th century, with a reconstruction attested in 1421 and a fortification in 1442. The building, with an elongated rectangular plan, is a square tower with a screw staircase, while a quadrangular dungeon with rounded corners completes the whole to the west. The kitchen preserves a monumental fireplace and a 15th century oven garden, testimonies of its medieval use. Subsequent changes, especially in the 17th and 19th centuries, have profoundly transformed its structure, with the addition of an east wing and a decoration of 1840s wallpapers illustrating Don Quixote.

Ranked and protected, the castle sees its facades, roofs, staircase in screws and kitchen inscribed in 1993, while the living room on the first floor and its decor of wallpaper are classified in 1995. These elements reflect its architectural evolution, between medieval defensive heritage and modern residential embellishments. The poet Charles de Pomairols spent his childhood there, adding a literary dimension to his history.

The building illustrates the stylistic and functional transitions of the Rouergue castles from fortress to aristocratic residence. Its plan, its defensive elements (donjon, tower) and its interior arrangements (roadway, wallpapers) make it an example of the Aveyron heritage, marked by centuries of adaptation. The accuracy of its location (GPS coordinates and Mérimée address) and its protection for historical monuments underscore its heritage importance.
