Origin and history

The castle of Vachères is a feudal building built in the 13th and 14th centuries, taking the form of a massive dungeon, quartered by four turrets, placed in the center of an esplanade surrounded by four low towers. Originally, the site was probably a fortified residence, reflecting the defensive needs of the medieval era. Major holes made in the 18th century changed its appearance, while in the 19th century, the four towers were rebuilt, partially altering its original structure.

Inside, the castle retains remarkable medieval elements, especially on the ground floor, where two large vaulted rooms house 14th century fireplaces. The dining room, on the other hand, preserved its 18th-century woodwork and closets, bearing witness to subsequent transformations. The first floor houses a gallery decorated with golden woodwork and paintings, as well as a living room decorated with panels by Charles-Joseph Natoire in blue camaïeu. The upper doors, initially painted by François Boucher, were replaced by copies. On the second floor, a bedroom with blue hangings and a wrought iron ramp staircase complete this architectural ensemble.

Ranked a historic monument in 2013, the castle of Vachères illustrates the evolution of styles and uses, from a medieval fortress to an aristocratic home embellished in the 18th and 19th centuries. The interior decorations, of exceptional quality, combine Gothic heritage and classical influences, while the successive transformations reflect the tastes and needs of the eras traversed. The building, protected in its entirety, also includes ancillary buildings and external spaces delimited on the classification plan.
