Origin and history
Valbelle Castle, located in Tourves in the Var, is an emblematic building of the second half of the eighteenth century. During this period, it was profoundly reshaped, reflecting the architectural and landscape influence of its time. The park, designed between 1767 and 1777 by the Count of Valbelle, illustrates the art of French gardens, before being ravaged by subsequent political upheavals.
During the French Revolution, the castle was confiscated as demigrated property, and its furniture was dispersed. Occupied as a garrison, he suffered major damage before being burned in 1799, reducing the building to ruins. The remains of the castle and the parcels of the old park, classified or listed in the Historical Monuments between 1921 and 2003, today bear witness to this lost heritage.
The estate, formerly owned by the Valbelle family, is now shared between the municipality of Tourves and the department of Var. Although partially destroyed, the site retains a historical and landscape value, protected by several classification orders. The ruins and surrounding grounds, such as the Grand Jardin or the Saint-Estève place, recall the past importance of this castle in the region.
