Origin and history

The castle of Vals, located in the valley of the Etze in Saint-Santin-Cantalès, is a 15th century building marked by a turbulent history. Damaged during the Wars of Religion, it was restored in the 17th century by Jean Dubois, then transformed in the 19th century by Jean-Baptiste Rames, a passionate geologist. Its architecture, typical of the Cantal, combines a quadrangular main body, a round tower with a round path, and common volcanic bellows, all covered with lauze roofs.

Today owned by the Label family, the castle was inscribed in historical monuments by order of 2 July 2010. This classification recognizes its heritage value, both for its history and for its architecture representative of the region. The site, nestled at the bottom of the valley, bears witness to architectural changes and successive uses, from religious conflicts to scientific developments of the 19th century.

The castle of Vals also illustrates the role of castles in the Cantalian valleys: places of power, defense, and then residence. Its evolution reflects the social and economic transformations of the region, from the wars of Religion to the modernization work undertaken by enlightened owners such as Jean-Baptiste Rames, who left a scientific and architectural imprint there.
