Origin and history
The castle of Varennes, located in Savennières in the department of Maine-et-Loire (Pays de la Loire), is a 17th century building. Its buildings, organized in a U plan around a court of honour, date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The estate includes a 17th century Baroque chapel, as well as a cave transformed into a funeral chapel. The surroundings of the castle are structured by terraces, stairs and a picturesque park, marked by factories and edicles, including a gazebo and a nymph.
The castle was listed as historical monuments in 2012. This protection covers several elements of the estate, including the nymph, the terraces, the chapel with its funerary cave, and the park within its current limits, including the historic fence wall. The park, conceived as a "water promenade", retains traces of successive developments, mixing old structures and picturesque elements.
The castle of Varennes is today a private property. Although the information on its access to the public is limited, the site bears witness to an architecture and landscape characteristic of the major Ligerian domains of the 17th and 18th centuries. Its recent listing among historical monuments underscores its heritage importance in the Angelvin region.
