Origin and history

The Château de Vauboyen was built between 1809 and 1815 by the architect Claude-Louis Bernier, inspector of the Louvre buildings, for Madame de La Celle de Châteaubourg. At that time, the Bièvre Valley was a popular place for artists, notably thanks to Victor Hugo's literary salon at the nearby Roches castle. The site, located in a natural setting between Monteclin forest and valley, dominates Vauboyen station, served by RER C.

The castle has an empire Palladian style, with a cruciform plan in grinding and coating. Its north and south facades are pierced by two windows per level, while the east and west facades are decorated with Tuscan columns. The first level includes a trompe-l'oeil loggia to the west, topped by a triangular pediment. The park houses outbuildings in mill and brick (commons, stables, dovecote), and a monumental portal with Egyptian eclectic columns.

Ranked in historical monuments in 1979 (after an inscription in 1966), the castle protects its facades, roofs, interior staircase and remarkable rooms: vestibule, living rooms, west bedroom and studded ceiling. The sources also mention carved panelling, painted motifs, and statues on the porch, testimonies of its refined interior decor.
