Origin and history

Château de Vaux is a historic building located in the municipality of Verneuil-en-Bourbonnais, in the department of Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This monument, dated from the 17th century, is part of an estate composed of a body of rectangular main houses, flanked by two square pavilions and completed by a dovecote. The complex is located in the heart of a wooded park, typical of the aristocratic properties of that time.

The castle illustrates 17th century civil architecture, a period marked in Bourbonnais by relative stability after the disturbances of the Wars of Religion. The castles of this region served as residences for the local nobility, while playing an economic and social role in the organization of the surrounding lands. Their presence often reflected the power and influence of the family owners, although available sources do not specify the identity of the sponsors or occupants of the castle of Vaux.

The architectural elements mentioned, such as the house, the pavilions and the dovecote, are characteristic of the seigneurial residences of the time. The dovecote, in particular, symbolized a seigneurial privilege reserved for landowners. The wooded park surrounding the castle could be used both as a hunting space, as a place for walking and as a place to enhance the estate, according to the usual uses in the noble properties of the Great Century.
