Origin and history

The Château de Viels-Maisons is an 18th-century building located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. This castle is distinguished by its ordered park, one of the few preserved in Picardy Brie, composed of a large wooded park crossed by three radiant avenues arranged in the eighteenth century. This park is complemented by a small irregular garden, transformed in the early 19th century, as well as landscape elements integrating the moat of the old castle.

The monument has been included in the inventory of historical monuments since 1997, a recognition that protects its radiant avenues, its garden located on the site of the old castle, as well as outbuildings such as the gardener's house and the sheepfold. These elements, recorded by order of 28 November 1997, demonstrate the heritage importance of the site, both for its architecture and for its landscaping.

The castle of Viels-Maisons is part of a historical context where aristocratic residences were often accompanied by vast parks, reflecting the taste of the time for French-style gardens and ordered landscapes. The Picardy Brie, an agricultural and wooded area, has seen several of these ensembles disappear or transform, making the conservation of this site all the more remarkable.
