Origin and history

Villeblain Castle is an emblematic monument located in the hamlet of Villeblain, on the town of Chacrise, in the department of Aisne. Built in the 15th century, it is notably known for its square tower, dated the 16th century, which is the most remarkable element of the site. Although the interior of the castle is no longer in good condition, restoration work, such as the renewal of the roof in 2012, has partially preserved its structure.

The square tower of Villeblain Castle was listed as historical monuments by order of 19 April 1928. This ranking demonstrates its heritage importance. In the immediate vicinity of the castle, there is an old stable transformed into an orangery, located on the other side of the street. These architectural elements reflect the evolution of the site over the centuries, although information on its detailed history and occupants remains limited.

The castle is located in a rural setting, typical of the seigneurial buildings of the Hauts-de-France region. In medieval times and in the Renaissance, castles of this type often served as residences for local lords, while playing a role in the economic and social organization of the surrounding territories. Their presence also marked the landscape and reinforced the symbolic power of their owners, although Villeblain's specific archives do not provide details of its precise functions or historical occupants.
