Origin and history

The Château de Villefort is an emblematic building located in the commune of Sainte-Feyre-la-Montagne, in the department of Creuse, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Dating from the late 16th century, it was built on the foundations of an older castle, thus testifying to a continuous occupation of the site throughout the eras. Its architecture reflects the characteristics of the seigneurial residences of this period, marked by a transition between medieval and Renaissance styles.

The facades and roofs of the castle, as well as those of its titrated chapel, were officially listed as historical monuments by a ministerial decree of 17 March 1964. This heritage protection underscores the historic and architectural significance of the site. The castle is part of a typical rural landscape of Creuse, known for its scattered built heritage and its castles often linked to local history.

Although the available sources do not mention specific characters or events related to its construction or occupation, the Château de Villefort illustrates the role of aristocratic residences in the social and economic organization of the New Aquitaine to the Renaissance. These buildings often served as administrative centres, places of power, and symbols of prestige for the noble families of the region.
