Origin and history

The Château de Villotte-Saint-Seine is a modern building located in the eponymous village of Côte-d-Or (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté). Built mainly in the seventeenth century, it is distinguished by its H-shaped plan and its slate cover. The estate extends on the slopes of the Comb de la Louère, at the exit of the village, and includes a park later developed.

The architecture of the castle was completed in the 19th century by two forebodys, while the dovecote, dating from the 16th century, retains a lava roof topped by a lanternon decorated with a pigeon. The estate, including greenhouses, guardhouse, commons and gardens (potager, orchard, regular garden), was listed as historic monuments on 4 May 1995. These developments reflect the evolution of architectural usage and taste over centuries.

The castle illustrates the transition between medieval seigneurial residences and modern-day mansions. Its dovecote, prior to the main construction, bears witness to the symbolic and practical importance of these buildings in rural areas before the seventeenth century. The transformations of the 19th century, such as the greenhouses and the landscape park, mark the adaptation of the site to the lifestyles and aesthetics of the industrial era.

Today, the castle and its outbuildings (premises, parks, commons) are protected for their heritage value. Their inclusion in the inventory of historical monuments highlights their role in local and regional history, as well as their architectural and landscape interest. The site remains a representative example of Burgundy castles, mixing medieval heritage and modernity.
