Origin and history

The castle of Vocance, built in the 15th and 16th centuries, was originally a place of refuge and justice for the inhabitants of the valley. It administered five local communes and formed a small fortified city, dominated by a dungeon, on the left bank of the Cance. Its buildings, now partially disappeared, were much more numerous than at present, reflecting its past importance in the regional feudal organization.

The decline of the castle followed that of the feudal system, and today only its entrance buildings, located at the edge of the river, remain. These remains are gradually being restored by their current owners. The site, which has been listed as a historical monument since 1986, occasionally hosts courses in ancient music, reflecting a cultural appropriation of the heritage.

Located in the department of Ardèche, the castle is a typical example of late medieval fortifications, marked by their role both defensive and administrative. Its designation as historic monuments underscores its heritage value, while allowing its preservation and presentation for contemporary uses, such as cultural events.
