Origin and history

The Wailly Castle, located in Conty in the Somme department, finds its origins in the 16th century with the family of Hallewyn. In 1506 the marriage between Jeanne Mauchevalier and Jean d'Hallewyn brought Wailly into this line. The castle, originally built in the form of a "U" with three houses, is attributed to Alexander d'Hallewyn in 1629, as evidenced by an armored chimney. After the death of François d'Hallewyn in 1663, the seigneury passed to the Croÿ through the marriage of Marie-Josephine d'Haluin with Ferdinand de Croÿ.

In the 18th century, Joseph Anne Maximilien de Croÿ undertook important work on the embellishment, including the creation of a northern avenue and a neo-classical hemicycle. The Revolution interrupted these developments: the castle was seized, sold as national property and partially destroyed. In the 19th century, after a fire in 1895, the west wing was restored, but a new sinister in 1922 required reconstruction by architect Pierre Parent, giving the castle its present appearance.

During World War II, General Montgomery established his headquarters there in 1944. Today, the castle, a private property, preserves protected remains such as Historic Monument since 1974, including the ruins of the hemicycle, the facades of the communes and a chapel. Some of the places are rented for receptions, while the French-style gardens remind of its past.
