Origin and history

The Château des Bigottières is a historic monument located in the commune of Maisoncelles-du-Maine, in the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. This castle, mentioned as a fief vassal of the Aunay-Peloquin and the fiefs of Forges, was identified as a seigneurial house from 1613. Its environment includes a dry pond around 1800 and an adjacent stream, highlighting its anchoring in the local landscape.

In 1658 René Charlot, squire, had a private chapel built for his family. This chapel, described as sixteen feet high and covered with slate, was laminated and decorated with paintings depicting various saints. It also contained an altar adapted to its use, illustrating the religious and social importance of the seigneury at that time.

The Château des Bigottières is cited in historical archives, including the Dictionnaire historique, topographie et biographie de la Mayenne (1900-1910) d'Alphonse-Victor Angot and Ferdinand Gaugain. These sources also mention references to the Departmental Archives of Mayenne, confirming its status as a monument anchored in local history.
