Origin and history
Château des Bordes is a medieval building located in Couzon, in the Allier department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built mainly in the 15th century, it illustrates the architecture of the small castles of Bourbonnais of that time. Its quadrangular dungeon of 16 meters by 12, partly dating from the 14th century, is completed by an octagonal turret and wings surrounding a courtyard. Two towers, one of which houses a chapel and the other a dovecote now collapsed, mark the ends of the buildings.
The castle belonged to the Beaucaire family at the beginning of the 15th century, before being classified as a historical monument in 1929. Its interior preserves 15th century chimneys, partially covered with woodwork painted in the 17th century. Dominating the valley of the Burge, it is located near the Moulin des Bordes and the communal boundary with Saint-Leopardin-d'Augy, about 1.5 km north of the village of Couzon.
Architecturally, the Château des Bordes is distinguished by its spiral staircase giving access to the four floors of the dungeon, as well as its defensive and residential elements. Subsequent transformations, such as 17th century woodwork, bear witness to its evolution over the centuries. Its inscription in historic monuments in 1929 underscores its heritage importance in the landscape of the Bourbon castles.
