Origin and history

Château des Bouly is an 18th-century building built in 1755 by Jean-Baptiste Bouly, master of the Baronnie forge. Located in Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse in Haute-Saône, it reflects the influence of local industrial families, such as that of the Bouly, whose brother of Jean-Baptiste, François-Joseph, became the first elected mayor of the commune in 1790. This castle illustrates the link between economic and political power in modern times.

In the 19th century, the castle passed into the hands of Malliard's family, which placed its weapons and its motto, Pellendo Malleus Ardet ("By hitting the hammer"), highlighting its metallurgical heritage. The building, having served as a hospice, was classified as a historic monument in 1979 for its facades, roofs, and remarkable interior elements such as the staircase and dining room. A restoration of the facades took place in 2005.

Today, the Bouly castle bears witness to the industrial and social history of the Haute-Saône. Its architecture and interior decorations, protected since 1979, make it a significant example of the Burgundy-franc-comtois heritage, marked by the activity of the forges and the evolution of the local elites between the Ancient Regime and Revolution.
