Origin and history
The castle of the Counts of Forez, located in Cleppé in the Loire department, is a medieval building whose origins date back to the 11th and 12th centuries. This monument, now partially preserved, bears witness to the defensive architecture of this period in Forez, a region marked by feudal rivalries and the emergence of counties as structural political entities. The tower, the only still protected element, was inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of 27 October 1971, stressing its heritage importance despite the partial state of conservation of the site.
At the time of its construction, the 11th and 12th centuries correspond to a phase of consolidation of Comtal power in Forez, in a context where local lords reinforce their positions in the face of ecclesiastical and royal influences. The castles, like Cleppé, then played a key role in controlling the territories, serving as both seigneurial residences, symbols of power and strategic defence points. Their establishment often responds to geopolitical issues, such as the monitoring of communication axes or the dominance of fertile valleys, essential for agricultural resources.
The information available about this castle remains limited, but its inscription as a Historical Monument attests to its historical and architectural value. The approximate location, noted as "passible" (level 5/10), and the lack of details on any current interior or exterior developments suggest a site for further study. The sources mention an address at Rue de la Tour, evoking perhaps the most emblematic element still visible today.
