Origin and history

The Doyens Castle was built in Carennac, Lot department, under the leadership of Alain de Ferrières, Dean from 1529 to 1554. The latter was responsible for its construction and for the chapels of the northern collateral of the nearby church. The building illustrates the influence of local religious dignitaries on the civil and religious architecture of the time.

In the 17th century, François Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon, bishop of Sarlat and dean of Carennac from 1630 to 1681, ordered the decoration of the ceiling of the large living room. This painted ceiling, always visible, represents it in a portrait integrated with the mantle of the fireplace. This artistic detail reflects the role of prelates in the beautification of ecclesiastical residences.

The castle was the subject of successive protections in the 20th century: an inscription to historical monuments in 1929, followed by a partial classification in 1938. This classification includes facades, roofs, the north gallery of the church, a fortified door, a wall of enclosure with its tower, and the famous painted ceiling. These measures highlight the heritage value of the site, combining defensive and decorative elements.

The painting of the Blessed Sacrament, probably made in the eighteenth century, adds an additional religious and artistic dimension to the castle. Although less documented, it reflects the continuity of the decorative enrichment of the place, linked to its function as residence of the deans of the priory of Carennac.
