Origin and history

Château des Échardons is an 18th-century residence located in Agonges, in the Allier department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is organized around a courtyard closed on three sides by buildings, of which two towers and a dovecote remain previous constructions. The entrance is marked by a gate decorated with right feet surmounted by a pyramid and a stone ball, accompanied by a round tower with a lantern dome.

Reconstructed in 1792, the castle retains architectural elements typical of the period, such as roofs at the Mansart and a park centered on an alley, built in the early twentieth century. The entrance gate, the tower, and the facades and roofs of the communes were inscribed in the historical monuments by order of 14 March 1977. These remains illustrate the rural architecture of bourbonnais of the 18th century.

The estate, now privately owned, reflects the evolution of seigneurial residences in rural areas. The buildings, although partially renovated, offer an overview of the constructive techniques and uses of the modern era, notably through the presence of a pigeon-house, symbol of seigneurial privileges. The precise location of the castle is 2 Grand'Rue, 03210 Agonges.
