Origin and history
The Château des Essarts, located in the valley of the Mazelle in Beaune-les-Mines (comune of Limoges, Haute-Vienne), finds its origins in the middle of the seventeenth century, around 1660, with the construction of a body of rectangular houses and a square tower. This first building succeeded an earlier castle, of which no descriptive trace remains in the current sources. The original architecture, characteristic of this period, is distinguished by soberly decorated facades and a remarkable interior staircase, always preserved.
In the 19th century, the castle underwent important transformations. By 1833, the west building was raised and remodeled into a pavilion, while an east pavilion was newly built, symetricating the whole. Between 1870 and 1876, the park underwent a major landscape redesign, erasing the traces of an earlier garden. Subsequent developments (from 1964 onwards) further altered the site: extension of the courtyard, creation of French-style plates, filling of the old pieces of water, and addition of a water mirror.
The castle has been partially protected as historical monuments since 30 October 1996, covering the facades and roofs of the 17th and 19th century elements, as well as the original interior staircase. Sources mention a precise location (9001 Les Essarts, Limoges), but do not provide details of its contemporary uses (visits, events) or its historical owners.
The building thus illustrates the evolution of the aristocratic residences in Limousin, moving from a medieval fortress to a modernized marina, reflecting the architectural and landscape tastes of the classical and then romantic eras. The archives available (Merimée, Wikipedia, Monumentum) highlight its heritage interest, without mentioning any specific historical figures related to its construction or its transformations.
