Origin and history

The Château des Granges-Cathus, located in Talmont-Saint-Hilaire (Vendée), finds its origins in the 16th century with the construction initiated by Louis Cathus, close to Louis II de la Trémoille. In 1525, his descendant Jean Cathus continued to build and embellish the estate, marking its Renaissance architectural climax. The monument, typical of the seigneurial residences of the time, reflects the prestige of its owner lineage, integrated into the networks of influence of the Poitevin aristocracy.

In the 18th century, the castle was gradually abandoned by its owners, falling into a state of partial abandonment that threatened its integrity. This decline was reversed in the 19th century thanks to two key figures: Léon Aude, who began a first restoration campaign around 1850-1860, then the Count of Las Cases. In 1878 the architect Victor Clair was entrusted with the task of completing the works, restoring the castle's brilliance in 1876, while incorporating stylistic elements from the 19th century.

Official protections took place in 1984 with the classification of the large screw staircase and its carved decorations, as well as the inscription of facades and roofs. These measures underline the heritage value of the site, a witness to architectural developments between Renaissance and modern times. The castle thus illustrates the sustainability of noble residences in Pays de la Loire, between medieval heritage and contemporary adaptations.
