Origin and history
The Launays Castle is an emblematic building located in the village of Pierrefitte-sur-Loire, opposite the church, in the department of Allier in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This castle is distinguished by its architecture consisting of several square or round towers, as well as by a body of two-storey rectangular main houses, supplemented by a second body of three-storey houses. The whole is covered with slates and surrounded by a vast park, reflecting a neat architecture and harmonious integration into its environment.
The present castle was built in the 19th century to replace an old house with a Mansart roof, belonging to the powerful Guerry family. During the works, two treasures composed of gold and silver coins, struck with the effigy of several kings, were discovered in the foundations. These elements suggest a rich and ancient history, although the precise details of these discoveries and their dating remain to be confirmed.
Although the available sources do not specify the exact dates of construction or the significant events related to this castle, its architecture and the remains found attest to an ancient occupation and local importance. The Launays castle is thus part of the historical heritage of Allier and Bourbonnais, illustrating the evolution of seigneurial residences throughout the centuries.
