Origin and history
The Château des Martinanches is a medieval building built in 1070 by the Comptour d'Apchon family, native to Aveyron. It was built on an ancient Roman route between Le Puy-en-Velay and Clermont-Ferrand, on the site of a Roman grant station run by a certain Martinus, whose name evolved into Martinanches. Originally, this castle served as a weapons depot for the fiefs neighbouring Boissonnelle, Montboissier and Mauzun, reflecting its strategic role in the 11th century.
Architecturally, the castle consists of a body of rectangular houses flanked by corner towers, later completed by a north wing. It is lined with large moat and accessible by two bridges. The eastern façade, framed by circular towers, features a polygonal turret with a screw staircase. The south and north-east facades retain traces of their primitive state behind subsequent modifications. The commons, arranged in arc of circle, delimit the land-full to the south.
Partially classified as historical monuments in 1968 (façades, roofs, moats and garden) and inscribed in 1991 (inner elements such as stairs, chimneys or chapel), the castle illustrates the evolution of a medieval fortress as a seigneurial residence. Its history is linked both to the Roman heritage, via the ancient way and the grant, and to the local feudal organization, marked by alliances between neighboring fiefs.
The written sources mention specific studies, such as those of Laurent Blanchon (2012) on life in the castles of Auvergne, or Philippe Vidal (1983) on the chapel of the site. These works highlight the historic and historic importance of the monument in Puy-de-Dôme.
