Origin and history

Château des Noyers is a building located in Martigné-Briand, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built between the 15th and 17th centuries, it embodies an architectural heritage combining medieval elements and subsequent transformations. The estate, registered as a historical monument in 1996, includes a house, communes, a chapel, and defensive remains such as moats and towers.

The castle is associated with a wine-growing activity in the Layon valley, typical of this region. The commons, dating back to the 15th century, retain traces of their original function, while the wings and chapel were redesigned in the 16th century. The lower courtyard, with its rural houses of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, bears witness to the seigneurial and agricultural organization of the period. The estate also includes a chapel dedicated to Saint-Martin-des-Noyers, strengthening its historical and religious anchor.

The elements protected by the 1996 inscription cover the facades, roofs, towers, moats, and floors of gardens, as well as agricultural buildings such as a bakery. Private property, the castle illustrates the architectural and functional evolution of seigneurial estates in Anjou, between defense, habitat, and wine-growing. Its portal, turrets, and court audience recall its central role in local life.

The location of the castle, near Angers, makes it a witness to the history of Angelina, marked by the influence of the local lords and the development of the vineyard. The successive transformations reflect the adaptations to residential, defensive, and economic needs, from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Today, the domain remains a preserved example of this versatile heritage.
