Origin and history

The Château des Poiriers, originally named Les Périers in 1502 and then Les Periers in 1540, is a fief of the seigneury of Château-Gontier. His documented history began in the 16th century, with Bertrand de la Corbière as the first certified owner around 1506. The estate changed hands around 1520, when Jean Doublard acquired it, before moving between those of influential local families, including the Amys du Ponceau and the Laurent.

In the 18th century, the castle belonged to René du Laurent, knight, then Jules Simon, squire and lord of Kerviou. The major transformation of the site took place in the first half of the 19th century, when the Laumaillé family, especially Léon Laumaillé (mayor of Ligné-sur-Mayenne in 1871), became its owner and completely remanuaged. This change marks the architectural evolution of the castle, reflecting the tastes and needs of the rural aristocracy of the time.

The Château des Poiriers illustrates the seigneurial history of Mayenne, linked to local families whose alliances and possessions shaped the region's heritage. Its evolution, from Periers to Poiriers, reflects the toponymic and architectural changes over centuries, while remaining anchored in the feudal network centered on Château-Gontier.
