Origin and history

Château des Roches is an iconic monument located in the commune of Louvigné, Mayenne. Although its exact period of initial construction was not specified, its documented history began in the 19th century, when it became the residence of Auguste Simon du Tertre from 1834. In 1842 he gave it to Louis du Mans de Chalais, a marker of a turning point in his architectural evolution.

After a stay in Scotland, Louis du Mans de Chalais undertook a major transformation of the castle, giving it its present appearance, strongly inspired by Scottish castles. This stylistic reshuffle, dating from the mid-19th century, illustrates the influence of journeys and romantic currents of the period on the French architectural heritage. The castle thus embodies a unique blend of local heritage and foreign inspiration.

Historical sources, including the Dictionnaire historique, topographie et biographie de la Mayenne (1900-1910) by Alphonse-Victor Angot and Ferdinand Gaugain, attest to its regional importance. Although few elements are available on its older origins, its association with notable families such as the Le Mans de Chalais makes it a witness to the social and architectural changes of the Mayenne in the nineteenth century.
