Origin and history

The Château des Stuarts, also known as the Castle of Aubigny, is an emblematic building located in Aubigny-sur-Nère, in the Cher department. Built in the early 16th century by Robert Stuart d'Aubigny after the fire of 1512, it embodies Renaissance architecture and Franco-Scottish ties. Its facades and body of passage, typical of the first half of the 16th century, reflect the influence of Stuarts in France.

In the 17th century, the castle underwent major changes, notably under the impulse of Louise de Kéroualle, Duchess of Portsmouth. These changes, combined with subsequent restorations in the 19th century (such as the reconstruction of the south wing), shaped its present appearance. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1862, it now symbolizes both local heritage and cultural exchanges between France and Scotland.

Since the 19th century, the castle has changed its vocation: it now houses the town hall of Aubigny-sur-Nère and a museum dedicated to the Auld Alliance Interpretation Centre. The latter highlights the historic alliance between France and Scotland, while valuing the Stuarts' legacy, a Scottish family deeply rooted in Berry's history. Protected elements include the body of passage, north wing (XVI century), and 17th century transformations.
