Origin and history

The château des Vergnes () is a former gentilhommière built in the 17th century in the commune of Clermont-Ferrand, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme. This monument is distinguished by its architecture consisting of two square-shaped pavilions, forming a rectangular plan, as well as by a smaller octagonal pavilion to the west. The south-west facades, especially those of the corner pavilions and the central span, are crowned in a notorious way, reflecting the architectural style of the period.

In the 18th century, the castle underwent substantial changes, partially transforming its initial appearance. These changes reflect the changing tastes and needs of the owners of the time, although the precise details of this work are not specified in the available sources. The castle remains a representative example of the aristocratic residences of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

In 1976, the château des Vergnes was partially listed as historic monuments by ministerial decree, protecting its facades, roofs, and those of the adjacent octagonal pavilion. This official recognition underscores its heritage and architectural importance. Today, after a rehabilitation led by the city of Clermont-Ferrand, the castle houses a sociocultural centre, offering a new vocation to this historic monument while preserving its heritage.

The castle is part of a regional context marked by a rich history, where the genthommières often played a central role in local life, serving as residences for noble or bourgeois families. These buildings were also places of sociability and management of the surrounding lands, reflecting the social and economic organization of the Ancien Régime en Auvergne.
