Origin and history

The Château du Bac, located in Argentat-sur-Dordogne, is a historical monument whose construction spans the 16th and 17th centuries. It consists of a body of elongated main house, flanked by two buildings to the north, one of which has a turret. To the west, a small bell-roofed building extends the whole, while two turrets complete the structure. A steeple, placed on carved crows, adorns the west facade, and a square turret in corbellation dominates the northeast corner. An independent, square-planed, wood-frame dovecote stands nearby, supported by circular columns surmounted by truncated capitals.

The castle has been listed as a historical monument since 23 September 1966 for its facades, roofs and dovecote. Its architecture reflects the stylistic evolutions of the 16th and 17th centuries, with defensive elements such as turrets and brace, as well as decorative details such as carved crows. The dovecote, typical of seigneurial estates, emphasizes the agricultural and residential character of the site.

Available sources, including Monumentum, specify that the castle is located at the approximate address of 185 Avenue Lamartine in Argentat-sur-Dordogne (formerly Argentat), in the department of Corrèze. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory and its current condition (open or closed to the visit) is not mentioned in the data provided.
