Origin and history

The Château du Bel Esnault, also known as the Château de Bellenau, originated in the 17th century, although its present form and iconic park date mainly from the second half of the 19th century. Originally, the property belonged to Raoul Enault during the Renaissance, before being acquired in 1752 by the family La Fosse. It was under the impulse of Pierre Étienne Joseph-Lafosse (1828-1897), heir to the family and passionate about botany, that the estate was deeply transformed after 1847.

Between 1847 and 1897 Pierre Étienne Joseph-Lafosse set up a 2-hectare park, mobilising nearly 200 workers to create a unique picturesque garden. It will integrate canals, a lake with islands, artificial caves, bridges, and a ruined tower, while acclimatizing exotic plant species such as ferns and ginkgos. This ambitious, financially costly project forced him to sell some of his property in 1869, including his stable, with the exception of his mare Élisa, founder of the French Trotteur race. When he died in 1897, half of the park was turned into pasture.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the property was acquired by the Blanchet family, which renamed it "Les Palmiers" with reference to the many tropical species planted in the park. In 1907, the castle was enhanced by a second floor and partially converted into dairy and guest rooms. After a period of abandonment beginning in 2021, the park, registered as a historical monument since 2010, was taken over in 2023 by Patryk Bukowczan, accompanied by passionate horticulturalists, to restore its botanical and tourist heritage.

The Bel Esnault Castle Park is distinguished by its hydraulic and rare plant species, showing the influence of 19th-century picturesque gardens. Although the castle itself is not accessible to the public, the park remains open all year round. An association, "Les Amis du Jardin de Bellenau", works to enhance this site, classified for its exceptional character in Lower Normandy.
