Origin and history
The Château du Bois du Mont is a monument located in the new town of Peyre en Aubrac, in Occitanie. It is located near Javols, in the department of Lozère, on the heights on the right bank of the Triboulin, a tributary of the Truyère. Its altitude of 1,040 meters makes it a remarkable point of the local landscape, about 3 km west of Serverette and 1 km northeast of Javols.
In 1841, the map of the Napoleonic cadastre referred to him as the "house of the wood of the mountain". This historical reference is the only dated reference available in current sources, suggesting an official occupation or recognition of the site at this time. No other information on its origin, owners or precise role is documented in the available texts.
The noble castles and houses of this region, such as the Bois du Mont, were often linked to the local agricultural or seigneurial organization. In the context of the 19th century in Lozère, a rural and mountainous area, these buildings could serve as residences for wealthy families, land management centres or strategic points for the control of roads and natural resources. Their presence also reflected the social and economic dynamics of the time, marked by a predominantly agro-pastoral economy and a society structured around land ownership.
