Origin and history

The Château du Bois Gamats, originally built in the 12th century, was completely rebuilt in the 19th century. It housed a flour mill and served as a gabelle post, reflecting its local economic importance. Its proximity to Laval airport made it a strategic place during the Second World War, particularly under German occupation.

During the Liberation, the castle became General Bradley's headquarters from 7 August 1944. On August 22, 1944, General Leclerc landed there for permission to release Paris. Bradley, absent upon his arrival, finally gave his consent in the evening after being informed of the urgency by Commander Gallois, deputy of Rol-Tanguy.

The castle is also linked to local economic history: its current owner, André Jaud, is the founder of the E. Leclerc hypermarkets in Laval. Prior to that, he belonged to Mr. de Banville, a former naval officer, emphasizing his anchoring in the region's military and civil history.
