Origin and history
Château du Bois-Jourdan is a 17th-century building located in the commune of Bouère, Mayenne. This castle, typical of the architecture of its time, is part of the historical landscape of the Pays de la Loire. It reflects the characteristics of the aristocratic residences of this period, marked by a transition between Renaissance and classical styles.
The monument was first listed as a historic monument on 18 March 1980, and this protection was revised and confirmed by a new decree on 30 September 2022. The protected elements include the facades, the roofs of the castle and its outbuildings (chapel, laundry room, orangery, etc.), as well as the large living room with its Management Room decor. These protections highlight the heritage importance of the site.
The Pays de la Loire, a region where Bouère is located, was in the 17th century a rural and agricultural area, marked by the presence of the Earth nobility. Castles such as Bois-Jourdan often served as administrative and social centres for the surrounding estates, while embodying the prestige of their owners. Their architecture also reflected artistic developments and cultural influences of the time.
Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, also mention practical details such as the precise address of the castle (5455 Cht du Bois Jourdan, 53290 Bouère) and its Insee code (53036), confirming its territorial anchoring in the department of Mayenne. This information allows us to situate the monument in its geographical and administrative context.
