Origin and history
Château du Bos is a historic monument located in Blesle, in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It consists of a main residence erected in the seventeenth century, completed in the eighteenth century by a new building, as well as a chapel and outbuildings. Nearby stands a medieval tower, vestige of an ancient castle dating from the limit of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. This site illustrates the architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the modern era, with preserved rustic elements and original decorations, such as woodwork, fireplaces and paintings.
The property belonged to the White family of the Bos, which built the present castle in the seventeenth century next to the ruins of the medieval castle. In 1640, a bell in the chapel bears this date, indicating a major construction phase. The original project provided for a more ambitious building, but it remained unfinished, as evidenced by the visible waiting stones. In the 18th century, a span and a half-outlet pavilion were added, partially completing the whole. The seigneurial tower, square and dating from the second half of the 12th century, remains in a meadow south of the estate.
The Château du Bos has been protected as historical monuments since 1993 for its main body, chapel, barn and some interior decorations. The medieval tower, as well as the adjoining house and its land, were registered in 2010. These protections highlight the heritage value of the site, combining medieval heritage and classical architecture. Today the estate retains its authentic appearance, offering a rare testimony to local history and the evolution of aristocratic lifestyles in Auvergne.
Architecturally, the castle is characterized by a rectangular house body flanked by a square tower at the southwest corner. The 18th century building extends this tower, while the inner courtyard, lined with commons and chapel, organizes the northern space. Roofs, in long sections, croupes or constructions, as well as lava frames, reflect regional constructive techniques. Inside, woodwork, painted door tops and period chimneys make up a coherent decor, preserved since the beginning.
