Origin and history
Château du Bouchat is a medieval building located in the municipality of Lafeline, in the department of Allier. Dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, it initially presented itself as a quadrilateral of buildings flanked by towers, surrounding a small courtyard. Today, only the inlet body remains with its two towers connected by machicolis, as well as a later rebuilt wing. Inside, four adorned chimneys and traces of painted decorations still bear witness to his past.
The castle has been listed as historical monuments since 19 May 1965, protecting its main body and moats, excluding the north wing. Private property of the Baron and Baroness Jean-Pierre de Laitre, it illustrates the bourbonese defensive architecture of the late Middle Ages. Its existence was attested as early as 1375 in the form of a strong castle, evolving in the 15th century towards a more complex structure.
Available sources, including Monumentum's references and the Merimée base, specify that the site retains characteristic elements of the fortresses of that time, such as mâchicoulis and moats. Although partially modified, the castle remains a representative example of the castral heritage of the Allier, linked to the feudal history of Bourbonnais.
