Origin and history

The Buron Castle is a medieval building built between 1345 and 1385 for the Dukes of Rohan, who owned it for four centuries. This castle, located in Vigneux-de-Bretagne in the Loire-Atlantique, illustrates the defensive and residential architecture of the late feudal period, marked by the influence of the great Breton families.

In the 17th century, the estate passed by alliance to Madame de Sévigné, famous epistolary, who made regular stays there. This change of ownership reflects the marriage strategies of the elites of the Old Regime, where land was used to consolidate political and social alliances.

In 1700, the castle was acquired by the Hersart family of La Villemarqué, still owner today. This transfer marks a transition to an era in which castles gradually lose their military role to become aristocratic residences. The creation of Nantes Golf in 1969, encircling the estate on three sides, bears witness to the modern adaptation of historical spaces to contemporary uses.
