Origin and history
The château du Chiroux is a fortified building located in the commune of Peyrat-la-Nonière, in the department of Creuse, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Although its origins date back to the 12th century, its current structure is mainly the result of construction campaigns conducted in the 15th and 16th centuries. It is the oldest of the four listed historical monuments in the municipality, showing continuous occupation and fortification over centuries.
This castle illustrates late medieval defensive architecture, with characteristic elements of the Gothic and Renaissance periods. Its dungeon-logis, typical of the buildings of this time, reflects the military and residential needs of the local lords. The presence of this monument in a rural territory such as the Creuse underscores its strategic role, probably linked to the monitoring of communication routes or the protection of surrounding agricultural land.
The Creuse region, marked by a rural and artisanal history, saw its development around these castles of communities organized around agriculture, livestock and later textile industry, as evidenced by the proximity of Aubusson, famous for its tapestries. Castles such as the Chiroux castle served as administrative centres and refuges during times of unrest, while symbolizing seigneurial power over the surrounding lands.
