Évêques de Mende - Owners in the thirteenth century
Controlling the castle and its roads
Origin and history
The château du Choizal is a building located on the town of Balsièges, in the department of Lozère, in the Occitanie region. It is also known as the fortified Choizal farm, reflecting its dual use both defensive and agricultural. Located on the Sauveterre causse, it is close to the intersection of departmental roads D 31 and D 986, a location which gave it a strategic position to control local traffic axes.
In the 13th century, the castle belonged to the bishops of Mende, which underlines its importance in the network of religious and seigneurial power of the region. His role was to monitor the roads between Mende and Sainte-Enimie, as well as between Chanac and Ispagnac. This position made it a key control point in the medieval Gevaudan. The site was listed in the General Inventory of Cultural Heritage in 2004, recognizing its historical and architectural value.
The castle illustrates the adaptation of medieval fortifications to local needs, combining military functions and agricultural activities. This type of structure, common in Lozère, bears witness to the social and economic dynamics of the time, where ecclesiastical lords played a central role in the territorial organization. The region, marked by rugged terrain and limited communication routes, saw these castles as essential tools for ensuring security and control of trade.
