Origin and history

The Château du Fort is an iconic monument located in the Nantes Erdre district, specifically in Saint-Joseph de Porterie, Nantes. This castle, built in the 17th century, is closely linked to the history of the Galbaud du Fort family, which became its owner from 1683. The present building is commanded by Philippe-François Galbaud du Fort, a master adviser to the Chamber of Accounts of Brittany and adviser to the Conseil Supérieur de Santo Domingo. The architect Jean-Baptiste Ceineray is responsible for its realization, thus marking the importance of this project for the family.

The Galbaud du Fort family plays a central role in the history of the castle. Philippe-François Galbaud du Fort, father of General François Thomas Galbaud-Dufort and César Galbaud du Fort, is a major figure in this lineage. Later, Mother Mary of the Passion of Chappotin, whose mother belonged to this family, founded the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, and the castle became one of the houses of this religious congregation.

Over the centuries, the castle of the Fort changed hands and vocation. In 2017, he moved to the Dominicans of the Holy Spirit, who transferred there the house of the nuns as well as the Sainte-Catherine school in Siena. This change marks a new stage in the history of this place, which continues to play an important role in the religious and educational life of the region.
