Origin and history

The Château du Fouilloux, located in Saint-Germain-le-Fouilloux in Mayenne, was mentioned in the 12th century as a fief seigneurial. His first known lord, Gervais de Brée, is quoted in acts of that time. The estate, originally vassal de la châtellenie de Laval, was erected in 1542 by Guy XII de Laval. In 1601 it was described as a castle surrounded by ditches, with gardens and orchards enclosed with walls.

In the 17th century, Louis-Joseph de Montecler, governor of Laval, was the seigneur before the estate was acquired by Louis de la Chapelle. The present castle was built around 1785 by Michel René François du Mans, on the plans of architect Jean-Baptiste Tellot de Laval. It replaces an older home, of which there remains only a monumental fireplace. The house body, flanked by a square pavilion, comprises three levels and a terraced garden.

The communes were rebuilt in the late 19th century, and the gardens were renovated around 1920. The castle, including its 18th century chapel, landscape facilities and outbuildings, has been listed as historical monuments since 1 September 2016. It bears witness to the architectural and social evolution of a seigneurial estate that has become a modern aristocratic residence.

The estate extends over Saint-Germain-le-Fouilloux and Saint-Jean-sur-Mayenne, with protected elements such as the escape, greenhouses, and retaining walls. Its history reflects the transformations of the chestnuts in Mayenne, linked to local noble families such as the Laval, Montecler and Le Mans.

Michel René François du Mans' son, Michel du Mans de Bourglevesque, was mayor of Saint-Germain-le-Fouilloux and deputy of Mayenne from 1829 to 1830. This political link illustrates the family's lasting influence on the region after the Revolution.
