Origin and history

The Grand Launay Castle is an iconic 16th century building located in the municipality of Semblançay, in Indre-et-Loire. This monument, inscribed as historical monuments on June 3, 1932, illustrates the defensive and residential architecture of the late Renaissance. Its square plan, surrounded by moat, and its fortified elements such as the square turret or the drawbridge door (replaced later) make it a remarkable example of the genthommières of that time.

The castle consists of a main house body divided into two parts, supplemented by a second building in the east. A square (pigeonary) escape, with a lantern, remains at the southwest corner, while a defence tower, now extinct, once occupied the northeast corner. The courtyard, closed by a wall pierced by a fortified gate, reflects the balance between residential function and defensive system, characteristic of the seigneurial residences of the late sixteenth century in Touraine.

Ranked for its "remnants of the old" castle, the Grand Launay bears witness to the architectural transformations and adaptations of the local elites during a period marked by the wars of Religion and the consolidation of royal power. Its inscription in 1932 underscores its heritage value, both for its state of conservation and for its representation of the social and military changes of the late Renaissance.
