Origin and history

The Château du Grand Verdus is a fortified village built in the 16th century in Sadirac, Gironde. This Renaissance-style mansion is distinguished by its defensive elements, such as ramparts walls, round towers at corners, and a portal decorated with a triangular pediment. An inner courtyard, accessible by this gate surmounted by a decorative moucharabie, is framed by commons and rectangular towers. The whole, modified at the end of the sixteenth century (date reached 1579), was enlarged in the seventeenth century, while its agricultural parts date from the eighteenth.

The castle presents a hybrid architecture, combining residential and defensive functions. Its curved front body, overhanging turrets and logelles illustrate the Renaissance influence. The facades and roofs, protected since 1978, bear witness to its heritage importance. Private property, the estate also includes a vineyard, typical of the historic Aquitaine wineries.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1978, the Château du Grand Verdus embodies the evolution of noble residences between the Middle Ages and the modern era. Its fortifications, although modified, recall the tensions of the late 16th century, while its subsequent enlargements reflect a period of stability and prosperity for the Bordeaux wine region.
