Origin and history

The Château du Lude, located in the eponymous town of Sarthe (Pays de la Loire), finds its origins at the end of the 9th century with the construction of a fort of La Motte to protect itself from Viking incursions. This strategic site, at the borders of Maine, Anjou and Touraine, became a masonry fortress between the 13th and 15th centuries. During the Hundred Years War, he was occupied by the English (1425-1427) before being taken over by the French troops led by Ambroise de Loré. In 1457, Jean Daillon, the chamberlain of Louis XI, acquired it and began its transformation into a marina, entrusting the work to architect Jean Gendrot, who worked there until the beginning of the 16th century.

The south-eastern façade, known as "Francis I", completed between 1520 and 1530, illustrates the influence of the Italian Renaissance, with its carved medallions and porcupines, symbols of Louis XII. The castle welcomes prestigious guests such as Henry IV and Louis XIII. In the 18th century, the Marquise de La Vieuville added a neoclassical wing, while in the 19th century, the Marquis de Talhouët led a vast restoration campaign, combining neo-Gothic and Renaissance styles. The gardens, redesigned by Édouard André in 1882, combine French tradition with English romanticism.

The interiors are home to treasures such as the 16th century studiolo, decorated with paintings from Raphael's school, or the "Ange du Lude", a 15th century bronze girouette today at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1928, the castle and its six hectares of gardens, labeled "Remarkable Garden", perpetuate a cultural tradition with events such as Gardeners' Day. Since 1992, the entire estate, including its 19th century hydraulic system, has been protected.

Medieval kitchens, moats and commons of the seventeenth century bear witness to its architectural evolution. The garden, designed in 1880, and the garden of the Eperon, redesigned in 1997, reflect the adaptation of the places to the tastes of each era. The castle remains today the property of Nicolaÿ's family, which perpetuates its heritage through cultural events and active heritage management.

The Lude Castle embodies four centuries of French history, from its medieval defensive function to its present role as a place of memory and creation. Its eclectic architecture, interior decorations and gardens bear witness to its unique artistic and social transformations, from Renaissance to contemporary times.
