Origin and history

Château du Maurier is a 19th-century building located in La Fontaine-Saint-Martin, in the Sarthe department (Pays de la Loire). Built in the neo-Renaissance style, it succeeds a former mansion dating back to the early 16th century. Its architecture is partly inspired by the work of Philibert Delorme, especially for the frame of the barn. The castle and its outbuildings (orangery, commons, garden pavilion) have been listed as historical monuments since 1992.

The castle is erected by Pierre-Félix Delarue on an estate belonging to François-Théodore Latouche, mayor of La Flèche and first known owner. He was then occupied by Benjamin Aubery du Maurier and his son Louis Aubery du Maurier, whose family gave his name to the castle. These elements underline its roots in local history and its role in 19th-century aristocratic life.

The inscription to the historical monuments in 1992 covers not only the castle, but also its outbuildings, testifying to the heritage value of the whole. The mention of the frame inspired by Philibert Delorme, an iconic architect of the French Renaissance, reinforces his architectural interest. Today, the castle remains a representative example of 19th-century bourgeois residences in Sarthe.
