Origin and history

Château du Mazeau is a 16th century building located in the commune of Peyrat-la-Nonière, in the department of Creuse (New Aquitaine region). This monument, typical of Renaissance residential architecture, is distinguished by its house body with a door with a braid and a staircase tower decorated with terracotta motifs. A north wing houses a covered gallery, while a round tower, probably a dovecote, was destroyed in the late 19th century. The original chapel, once present in the courtyard, disappeared after its destruction by Gilles Gerbaud.

Since 2016, the castle has been listed as a historic monument, with remarkable features such as its watermill, powered by the Voueize, as well as barns bearing witness to its old agricultural estate. The official protections cover all the houses (known as "old castle" and "new castle"), their outbuildings and the ground of the plot. Architecture thus blends medieval traces, like the round tower, with Renaissance additions, reflecting the stylistic evolutions of the era.

The site is part of a rural landscape marked by the history of Limousin, where castles often played a role both defensive, residential and economic. The presence of the mill and agricultural buildings underlines its anchoring in local activities, between seigneurial exploitation and community life. Today, the Château du Mazeau remains a preserved example of this heritage, although parts, such as the chapel, have been lost over the centuries.
