Facades and roofs of the castle and the communes (Case C 47): inscription by decree of 17 February 1989

Origin and history

The Château du Petit-Serrant is an 18th-century building located in Boumaine, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. This monument, typical of the residential architecture of its time, is part of a landscape marked by the aristocratic and bourgeois constructions of the modern period. Its designation as historic monuments in 1989 reflects its heritage value, particularly for its facades and roofs, protected by decree.

At the time of its construction, the Pays de la Loire region was marked by a rural and artisanal economy, where castles often served as secondary residences for local elites or administrative centres for agricultural estates. Boumaine, close to Angers, enjoyed a strategic position along the Loire, promoting trade and cultural exchanges. Monuments such as the Petit-Serrant reflected the social status of their owners and helped to embellish the territory, while playing a role in the social and economic organization of the region.
