Origin and history
The Château du Plessis is a 17th and 18th century residence in Saint-Aubin-des-Châteaux, in the Loire-Atlantique department. This monument, inscribed as historical monuments in 1992, is inserted in a wooded setting overlooking the River Dear. Its architecture reflects major transformations, with a modernized western part around 1640 and a wing added around 1738.
The site of the Plessis was occupied in the Middle Ages, as evidenced by a first manor built between the 14th and 15th centuries. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle became a seigneurial residence, and in the 19th century it was organized as an agricultural production unit, incorporating dedicated buildings (supply, press, barns). The facades and roofs of the castle, as well as those of the communes and a 17th century pavilion, have been protected since 1992.
Available sources, including the Mérimée and Monumentum base, highlight its heritage importance in the Pays de la Loire region. The castle illustrates the evolution of noble homes in rural areas, moving from a residential function to an economic role linked to the exploitation of surrounding lands. Its inscription as a Historic Monument in 1992 enshrines its architectural and historical value, while preserving elements dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
