Origin and history

The Pradel Castle, located in Mirabel in the department of Ardèche, is an emblematic monument linked to the history of French agriculture. It was the home of Olivier de Serres, a Protestant renaissance agronomist, who installed there in 1578 a model farm after the wars of Religion. This area became a place of agricultural innovation, especially for the establishment of silk in Ardèche. The castle, partially destroyed in 1628 during religious conflicts, was rebuilt by the son of Olivier de Serres.

In the 19th century, the castle was transformed into an agricultural school after 1920. Since 1990, it has housed a museum dedicated to Olivier de Serres and his pioneering work. The site preserves four historic 16th century rooms, as well as archaeological remains and a reconstructed garden. The interior decor, like a rare 19th century wallpaper, bears witness to its rich past.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1997 and labeled Maison des Illustres in 2012, the Pradel Castle is today a place for the memory and transmission of agricultural knowledge. Partly owned by the State, it houses protected elements, including cellars, gardens and historic hydraulic systems. Its role in local and national history makes it a major heritage site of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
