Origin and history

Saulchoix Castle was built in 1679 for the Louvencourt family in the commune of Clairy-Saulchoix, about ten kilometers from Amiens. It probably replaces an anterior home and consists of a central brick and stone house body, flanked by two wings on the courtyard side. The windows were enlarged in the 18th century, and the outbuildings rebuilt in the 19th century, when the park was redesigned in English.

The Saulchoix seigneury, under the baronie de Picquigny, passed into the hands of several noble families, including the Croÿ, the Conty, and the Louvencourt. Marie Marguerite de Conty brought in dowry to Jacques Eustache de Louvencourt in 1638. Their son, François de Louvencourt, had the present castle built. In 1793 Eustache de Louvencourt sold the estate, which changed hands several times before being acquired in 1821 by Marie Josephe de La Fonteyne, widow of Jean de Gillès. Since then, he has been passing on to this family.

The estate, including the castle, the chapel, the communes, the gate, the greenhouse, the fence walls, the park and the wood, was inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of 18 March 2009. The protected elements also cover cellars, some interior rooms, and farm buildings. The site thus combines classical architecture and 19th century landscape developments.
